Why I Give
Picture
Stephen Lund, an Assistant Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney responsible for civil litigation, is a monthly donor to Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas. With a legal career spanning 15 years, half in government positions and half in private practice, Steve and his wife give to “four or five organizations” on a monthly basis.

“A few years ago my wife and I considered how we were using our money,” Steve said. “As Christians, we believe we should love our neighbor. We give to organizations that make an impact on the poor.” Making monthly gifts allows the Lunds to vary the amount they give based on their income variability. “As our income has increased over time, so has our giving,” he said.

Steve volunteered his legal expertise while practicing in Tennessee by assisting families seeking dual Mexican citizenship for their American-born children. “It was important to those families and required a court order in that state.” His most satisfying legal case involved a woman defending a restraining order in a domestic violence matter. The husband had made an appeal to rescind the order. Steve was able to demonstrate that the legal premise for the appeal was wrong, keeping the order in place and protecting the client from her abuser.

The support of donors like the Lunds makes possible the work of Legal Aid attorneys who provide free, high-quality legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in 114 counties in North and West Texas.

In 2020, despite the pandemic, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas served more than 43,000 individuals, including 20,631 children, 861 veterans, 3,339 domestic violence survivors, and 4,549 people with disabilities. Of 19,060 closed cases, females comprised nearly 75 percent of people helped by Legal Aid. Covid-19 was reported as a factor in 2,976 of the closed cases.
