Legal Aid Assists With Post-Disaster Recovery Efforts

Picture
Since late April, many parts of Texas have been hard hit by severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding. These weather events have caused severe damage enough to receive federal disaster declarations, which enable those affected to be eligible for benefits from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

As of late June, 14 counties in Legal Aid’s service area have been declared federal disaster areas: Coke, Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Eastland, Ellis, Fannin, Hockley, Jones, Kaufman, Lynn, Montague, and Sterling. In some of these counties, Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) have been opened by FEMA. Most DRCs operate 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day and provide one-on-one help to people who live in any county declared a federal disaster area. FEMA staff are onsite at the DRCs to offer one-on-one help to those applying for FEMA benefits. Legal Aid staff trained to handle the myriad legal issues that arise after a disaster are also onsite at DRCs to offer legal information and resources and to take applications for post-disaster help. Legal Aid’s onsite DRC staffing hours will vary.

If you or someone you know has been affected by these storms, please visit our Facebook page or our website for news and information, or apply for help by calling our Disaster Assistance Line at 817-339-5391.
