Why I Give: Krisi Kastl

Krisi Kastl is a dynamo in the legal community whose impact reaches across Texas. The immediate past President of the Dallas Bar Association, she will be joining the State Bar of Texas’ Board of Directors in June. Throughout her career, and even during law school, Krisi has been a leader in the legal profession.

Currently, her firm sponsors Kastl’s Court, a mock trial competition at the UNT Dallas College of Law. Krisi has been a key contributor and leader of the Equal Access to Justice Campaign, which supports the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program, a joint partnership of the Dallas Bar Association and Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas.

Krisi’s credits her grandfather, who briefly practiced law, as the origin of her interest in a legal career. “Growing up in El Paso, I saw many families that didn’t have the resources to afford an attorney,” she says. “My own parents feared the law since they didn’t really understand it. Since I was on a full scholarship at Texas Tech University’s School of Law, I felt the need to help others who couldn’t help themselves.”

Her professional association leadership began in law school as the President of Women in Law. It has continued with a lengthy list of roles including President of the Dallas Women’s Lawyers Association. When asked about her most enjoyable position, it was clearly a difficult choice. “Probably my favorite was serving as President of the Dallas Bar,” Krisi says. “I could do that position forever. There is so much support from the great staff. I enjoyed the local community involvement.”

Krisi has been a staunch supporter of Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, among her other charitable endeavors. Her year as Dallas Bar President is still the high watermark for the success of the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program campaign, largely because of the number of overall donors making gifts. She is a regular member of several Legal Aid fundraising committees including the Women’s Advocacy Awards and the Builders of Justice reception. She also gives generously and encourages others to attend these fundraisers and support Legal Aid.

Ultimately Krisi might like to serve in a larger role, perhaps even politically. “I’m not sure what office I would want to consider, but definitely either statewide or national,” she says.

It seems a natural evolution for someone who has spent a lifetime serving others.
