I am excited to share that Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (Legal Aid) is continuing to provide basic civil legal services to eligible residents in our communities. Legal Aid’s exceptional advocacy and litigation work is protecting the rights of low-income individuals and families who would not otherwise have meaningful access to a lawyer.
Navigating the legal system and understanding ones’ legal rights can be challenging. Legal Aid is securing justice; protecting the vulnerable; and educating communities through the delivery of advice, brief legal services, and extended advocacy or litigation. Every day, our dedicated team walks side-by-side with those desperate for our help.
Legal Aid has a long history of providing quality legal services that meaningfully change the lives of those receiving legal assistance. Legal Aid is able to end the cycle of domestic violence, protect children from abuse or neglect, and protect families from wrongful evictions.
Legal Aid staff advocate for seniors subjected to scams or identity theft, assist veterans in securing earned benefits, and remove barriers to better employment, housing, and educational opportunities through expunction or nondisclosure of eligible criminal records. Legal Aid advocates in the area of environmental justice, federal tax issues, employment matters, debt collection, and other situations when applicants have issues where a legal remedy may not be readily apparent. Data suggests that the need for legal services continues to rise and the numbers of those unable to afford basic civil legal help is growing. At Legal Aid, we work with communities, nonprofit organizations, and dedicated volunteers to expand legal services to the poor. It is through the generosity of individual donors, foundations, and private businesses that makes it possible for Legal Aid to continue to expand our services to address this growing need.
I am grateful for the dedicated Legal Aid staff who provide expert legal services and support, including the more than 54,500 people who were provided services in 2021. Our staff serve clients faithfully, with compassion, and often go over and above to make a positive impact on the lives of the clients.
Our clients are so very appreciative of the often life-changing services. One example is a U.S. citizen who, after being forced to move from his apartment when his income significantly decreased during the pandemic, lost several critical documents including his original birth certificate (from another country) and his passport. He was not able to accept employment because he did not have a valid Texas driver’s license. Legal Aid assisted him in navigating the administrative process and obtaining supporting documents needed to obtain his driver’s license. This work not only opened the door to full-time employment but also to stable housing, making his future brighter with opportunity.
Your continued and increased support for our services allows Legal Aid to make a difference by ensuring equal justice for low-income people through the provision of high-quality legal representation that improves the lives of low-income Texans.
