Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (Legal Aid) is bridging the justice gap by ensuring that access to justice becomes a reality for over tens of thousands of people each year.
As of May 15, 2023, Legal Aid concluded more than 10,113 cases by providing essential civil legal services to low-income individuals applying for legal help on one or more issues. Over 22,340 low-income individuals have received assistance on a host of diverse legal issues. Experienced legal staff offered advice, brief service, and full legal representation before courts and/or administrative tribunals. Legal Aid offered community education and outreach events to educate on various substantive topics, assisted with making applications for its services, and connected people to relevant community resources.
Legal Aid assists those individuals least able to afford high-quality legal assistance because of a lack of resources and oftentimes the most vulnerable and marginalized persons in our society. Legal Aid focuses on assisting veterans; families facing housing instability; the elderly; those with medical or mental health issues; survivors of abuse; and those impacted by the opioid crisis and natural disasters or who face barriers to opportunities to improve their social or economic conditions.
Legal Aid works to improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities by addressing legal issues and securing positive and life-changing outcomes. For example, an elderly individual with disabilities contacted Legal Aid after the lender filed an expedited foreclosure lawsuit against him for nonpayment of his mortgage and he had missed the deadline to file a response with the Court. He was extremely afraid of losing his home. The Legal Aid attorney immediately worked with the client to file a response to prevent the court from signing a default order and helped the client apply for assistance through a state-administered foreclosure prevention program. The Legal Aid attorney contacted the mortgage lender to advise that the application for mortgage assistance had been filed and requested additional time to allow for review of the application by the agency administrating the fund. The request was granted. The client later received confirmation that the application was approved to pay the back-owed balance of $20,300, which included administrative fees assessed against the account. The client’s mortgage was reinstated and foreclosure was avoided allowing him to remain in his home.
It is often through tears of happiness that clients express their deep appreciation for their legal aid advocate and the resolution of a legal issue. It is what we do every day and are pleased to share one of our many stories. We thank our supporters who help make civil legal aid a reality for so many.
