Ted Hill and Laura Hunter – Making A Difference In Their Community
Ted Hill’s father-in-law, Hershell Hunter, worked at cutting tile for a living but learned bookkeeping at home as a means to improve his situation. He went to work for Moorman Meador at Meador Dodge in 1982, eventually progressed into ownership of the auto dealership. Though he sold the business in 2007, the buyers had financial difficulties so he reacquired it.
Laura Hunter, Ted’s wife, and her brother, Kyle, worked for their father, learning the business along the way. Eventually Ted left his job in the tech industry and joined the family business. When Laura's father retired, Laura and Kyle ran the dealership until selling it in 2022.
With the proceeds from the sale, Ted and Laura decided to share their success with charitable gifts to organizations they believed made a difference in Tarrant County. Among the nonprofits they supported were the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Planned Parenthood, and Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas.
When Ted saw that Legal Aid was listed as a charitable organization on the North Texas Giving Day website, he wondered why a group of attorneys would need money. He recalled several times in the past when he experienced legal issues and knew that civil actions could be expensive and often take a long time to resolve. Ted decided he and Laura should donate to support those who couldn’t afford a lawyer having that same legal access.
After the couple made their initial $5,000 gift on Giving Day, they continued making charitable gifts at year-end, including a $20,000 donation to Legal Aid. Ted didn’t realize when they made their gifts that LANWT has nearly 200 staff attorneys and many volunteer private practice attorneys in its 114-county service area who take cases for clients who can’t otherwise afford one.
With the help of caring supporters like Ted and Laura, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas provided free civil legal services helping more than 62,000 low-income Texans last year. Those services helped veterans secure earned benefits, ensured the safety of domestic violence survivors, kept low-income residents in their homes, aided those affected by sexual violence, and helped civic groups fight to keep polluting businesses from their neighborhoods.
