Our Client - Marilyn's Story
Marilyn was referred to our Tarrant County Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) for help with an eviction appeal and a housing choice voucher termination. Marilyn was sued for nonpayment of rent and a judgment was issued against her by the court. She appealed the judgment just before being referred to Legal Aid for help.
Because Marilyn participates in the Housing Choice Voucher Program, she was at risk of being removed from the reduced-rent program if she lost the eviction appeal. When the MLP attorney investigated the case, she found that the rent wasn’t paid due to the apartment management’s failure to make necessary repairs. As a result, the local housing authority that provided the voucher to Marilyn refused to pay its portion of the rent, which made Marilyn vulnerable to eviction.
The attorney successfully represented Marilyn at the eviction appeal hearing; the court issued a decision in Marilyn’s favor and dismissed the eviction suit and allowed her to remain in her apartment long enough to find a new place to live that would accept her housing voucher. The attorney also worked with the housing authority to rescind the voucher termination decision it rendered against Marilyn, ensuring that she remained in the Housing Choice Voucher Program
