When Lucinda met Matt, she thought he was a nice guy. He listened to her and told her he cared about her. Lucinda believed that she was in love, although Matt was actually abusive to her. Lucinda did not know better because she was only a young teenager and Matt was more than 20 years older than she. When authorities became aware of the situation, Matt was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a minor; he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Lucinda received counseling and moved on with her life, got married, and had children. One day, she received a friend request from Matt on a social media site. She was shocked, because her privacy settings were set high enough to avoid public viewing of her information. Despite this precaution, Matt, who was now out of prison without any parole supervision, got through the privacy settings and the cyberstalking and harassment began.
Lucinda sought help from Legal Aid; her application was accepted through LANWT’s Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault (LASSA) program. The LASSA attorney filed for a lifetime sexual assault protective order and a virtual hearing was set. Matt filed an answer, contesting the protective order (PO) request.
Despite being fearful of seeing Matt again even if only online, Lucinda was a strong witness, testifying about the repeated sexual assaults committed by Matt against her when she was a minor. The trial judge ruled in Lucinda’s favor and granted the lifetime PO, which will allow her to move forward without fear of being harassed.
