Grant Brings Hope and Help to Individuals and Families Struggling With Opioid Use Disorder
Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas has been awarded a $1.3 million Opioid Use Disorder Legal Services grant by the Texas Access to Justice Foundation. The grant will support Legal Aid’s “Path Beyond Opioids Legal Aid Project,” which provides holistic civil legal services to income-qualified North and West Texans directly impacted by opioid use disorder.
“This grant is the first step toward bringing hope and help to individuals and families struggling with the aftermath of substance use disorder,” says Tom Stutz, Director of Litigation. “The direct legal services include addressing legal barriers for people in recovery and their families, such as helping them expunge or seal eligible criminal records or obtain a valid driver’s license so they can return to work. The grant will allow our attorneys to negotiate debt repayment plans, maintain stable housing, and secure public benefits.”
In addition to providing direct legal services, Legal Aid staff will also raise awareness about the services provided under the grant, collaborate with community partners to identify and refer clients with civil legal problems, and hold specialized legal clinics and presentations.
Nationwide, legal aid programs have been helping those affected by the opioid crisis with cases involving family law including child abuse and neglect, child support and custody, and guardianship cases; domestic violence and protective orders, housing issues, and elder abuse.
