Some Administrative staff members were on hand recently to personally thank Janet Denton, Director of the Tarrant County Dispute Resolution Program in Fort Worth, who nominated Legal Aid for this award. (L-R): Tom Stutz, Maria Thomas-Jones, Janet Denton, Merrit Klapperich, John Hasley, and Bill Marple.
The Government and Public Service Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association recently recognized Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas with the prestigious Hodson Award for Public Service. Legal Aid was selected for the 2023 award for the “work ethic, accomplishments, and dedication of [your] staff [which] is truly an inspiration to other public lawyers across the country. We thank you for providing an outstanding example of public service.”
Maria Thomas-Jones, LANWT’s CEO, accepted the award in person alongside two other honorees. “Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas is honored to have received the prestigious 2023 Hodson Award,” says Maria. “Since 1951, LANWT’s staff have been dedicated to providing outstanding free civil legal services to low-income Texans, especially during the recent eviction crisis. We are proud to be part of those legal professionals dedicating their skills to a career in public service and in ensuring there is the opportunity for meaningful participation in our legal system by all.”
The Hodson Award is named in honor of the distinguished public service career of the late Major General Kenneth J. Hodson, a former Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Army and a founding member of the Government and Public Service Lawyers Division. The award recognizes sustained, outstanding performance or a specific and extraordinary service by a government or public sector law office.
