Trusting Senior’s Home Ownership Restored After Scam By ‘Friend’
Ted, an elderly man with disabilities, became friends with a young woman who offered to move in and help him with household chores he could no longer do. The arrangement worked well until she invited one of her friends to move in as well.
Shortly thereafter, a couple came to his home and asked for a quick tour as it had been listed for sale and they were interested in buying it. Ted was shocked: he inherited the home from a family member years before and had no intention of selling it.
Ted recalled that his live-in friend recently asked him to sign some documents she said she need to obtain a personal loan. When he asked her about the couple wanting to buy his home, she claimed it was a simple misunderstanding. Fortunately, Ted knew about Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas and called to apply for help.
During their first meeting, the attorney learned that Ted suffered from severe anxiety and was prone to trusting people. The attorney’s fear that the documents Ted signed transferred title to his live-in friend was well founded. The attorney immediately filed a lawsuit against both the friend and the firm she was working with to sell the home. After litigation, the title to Ted’s home was back in his name and he learned an important lesson on being careful who to trust.
