Attorney Bruce Williams
Team Effort Credited After Emergency Call Comes In
When a district judge called Legal Aid’s Home Preservation Project line to ask whether an attorney could appear in her North Texas family law court within an hour to help a young woman who needed court representation, Bruce, the attorney who took the call, sprang into action. Although he did not routinely practice family law, Bruce agreed to help and quickly reached out to an experienced colleague to walk him through the basics of a custody hearing.
Meanwhile, a legal assistant in the Panhandle prepared and faxed the necessary pleadings so everything would be ready when Bruce arrived at court. Despite the short notice, our attorney skillfully presented the case, limiting his role to that hearing. His arguments prevailed, securing protection for the survivor when she needed it most.
After the hearing, something unusual happened. The judge stepped down from the bench and approached Bruce. She asked if he would mind getting a hug, telling him this was her first case involving Legal Aid and that she could not have been more impressed. Afterward, Bruce credited his colleagues for what was a genuine team effort.
