Protecting a Child, Supporting a Survivor

When our client was referred to us by a local women’s shelter, she needed urgent help with a custody case to protect her 8-year-old child. The client had survived severe domestic violence by the child’s father, leaving her with serious injuries. He was arrested for aggravated assault and served with custody papers while in jail.

With our legal team’s help, the court granted our client sole custody of her child, and the court entered permanent injunctions against the father after making a legal finding of family violence. This ensured safety and stability for both mother and child.

After the custody order was finalized, Legal Aid’s social worker stepped in to guide our client through the Texas Crime Victims’ Compensation program, assisting with applications, translations, and paperwork. Thanks to this support, our client was approved for $5,000 in relocation reimbursement—vital assistance after being forced to move for her safety.
