Legal Aid Seeks Protection for a Client

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) is often the only resource available to low-income individuals and families facing dire emergency situations and seeking immediate protection under the law. Without the assistance of dedicated legal aid attorneys and support staff, these remedies may be beyond their reach. The following case is one example that demonstrates the critical need for legal aid services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault who are seeking protective orders.

Sally and her minor children were referred to LANWT for immediate representation at an upcoming hearing on her application for an order of protection with special conditions. Sally’s partner had physically abused and sexually assaulted her, causing injuries, and Sally was also concerned about the safety of her minor children.

LANWT’s staff attorney took immediate action to obtain the necessary evidence to support Sally’s case, advised her regarding the law and remedies available to her, and prepared her to testify in court.

LANWT’s staff worked together to ensure that Sally was prepared to see her abuser in court, testify openly, and take the necessary steps to respond to cross-examination. LANWT’s social worker also assisted Sally in preparing emotionally for the hearing and provided proven techniques to help her manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges associated with the proceedings.

With the support and advocacy of LANWT’s attorney and staff, Sally was able to obtain an Agreed Protective Order signed by the judge, providing an extended period of protection of up to 10 years, along with additional provisions designed to protect her from further abuse.

Sally can now move forward with her life with the protection and legal remedies afforded to her under the law, made possible through LANWT’s diligent legal representation and advocacy.
