LEGAL AID EXPRESS
SUPPORT ON WHEELS, WHEN IT MATTERS MOST
Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas is proud to introduce Legal Aid Express—a mobile unit designed to bring critical legal services directly to communities when and where they are needed most. Legal Aid Express was designed not only to provide legal services in a confidential and comfortable space, but also to support disaster survivors with essential needs during times of crisis—especially in the event of power outages or loss of cellular or internet access.
The unit is equipped with a wheelchair lift, ensuring that individuals with mobility challenges can meet privately with staff in an air-conditioned space. It also features exterior power outlets for charging personal electronic devices, as well as guest Wi-Fi, so users can communicate with family, access email, and share important documents related to their legal issues. An exterior awning provides a shaded space for individuals to wait, complete paperwork, or rest, while an exterior screen and a wireless public address system enable our team to conduct community education and outreach on legal rights and resources.
Disasters—both natural and artificial—are becoming increasingly frequent. In recent years, Legal Aid has responded to winter storms, flooding, wildfires, tornadoes, severe storms, and even a mass shooting within our service area. During these events, many survivors are unaware that what they view as a personal hardship may also have a legal solution.
Common legal issues that arise during disaster recovery include clearing title to property, resolving insurance disputes, navigating FEMA applications and appeals, addressing landlord-tenant concerns, and replacing vital documents. Legal Aid Express allows us to meet survivors where they are and help them address these challenges more quickly and effectively.
The design and construction of this two-office mobile intake unit was funded through a grant from the Legal Services Corporation. Delivered in June 2025, Legal Aid Express is more than a mobile unit—it is a critical tool that strengthens our ability to respond to disasters, supports vulnerable communities, and fulfills our mission of ensuring access to justice for all Texans.
