Justice For Tenant By Securing a Fair Outcome

Our client responsibly moved out of her rental home at the end of her lease. She was current on her rent, left the home in good condition, documented everything with photos, and provided her forwarding address by email to the landlord.

Despite the client following the law, the landlord failed to return the $2,700 security deposit within the required 30 days. When the client sent a demand letter, the landlord responded with more than $2,000 in questionable charges, including one designated as “touch-up paint.”

Determined to stand up for her rights, our client filed a small claims lawsuit. The landlord hired an attorney and filed a formal response, putting our client at a serious disadvantage. That’s when she turned to Legal Aid for help.

Our attorney stepped in, sent discovery requests to the landlord’s attorney, and began negotiating on her client’s behalf. After several rounds of counteroffers, the landlord offered a $6,000 settlement, which our client accepted.

This outcome not only made the client whole but also reflected the additional recovery she would have been entitled to under Texas law if the court determined that the landlord acted in bad faith. Our client shared that she plans to use this money to pay for her college tuition.
