Happy Ending to Veteran's Trials

Picture
Charlie is a disabled veteran who sought Legal Aid’s help after receiving an eviction notice for nonpayment of rent. He fell behind in rent on his mobile home due to an illness that required hospitalization.

Charlie was fortunate to locate a local veterans’ group that would help him get caught up on rent, but the group would not release funds to the landlord until receiving assurance that the lawsuit would be dismissed and that Charlie would not be evicted from his home. The Legal Aid attorney reached out to the landlord and successfully negotiated a settlement agreement. He agreed not only to dismiss the eviction lawsuit but also amended Charlie’s lease to reduce the monthly rental payments.

In exchange, Charlie agreed to pay his rent on time and reimburse the landlord for the cost of the eviction lawsuit. With Legal Aid’s help, Charlie remained in stable housing at a reasonable market rate while giving the veteran a little extra money each month to help pay for food and other necessities.
